Asafoetida Essential Oil

Asafoetida Essential Oil is used to treat chronic bronchitis and asthma, whooping cough (pertussis), croup, and hoarseness. It has also been used for digestive problems notably gas, and irritable bowel syndrome, and irritable colon. IT has been traditionally used as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.

Asafoetida has been used for hysteria, insanity and convulsions, as well as to treat the debilitating fatigue and depression associated with neurasthenia. Asafoetida has also been successful in treating secondary amenorrhea, or abnormal cessation of periods.

Instructions for Use

Asafoetida can be applied as a tincture to treat corns or calluses, or rubbed on the belly for digestive problems. It is generally not used as in the oil form, but when used in very small concentrations it can be effective in aromatherapy to help ones singing voice. Although, many would find the smell quite objectionable.

History and Additional Information

The name comes from a Persian word “asa” meaning resin, and the Latin “Foetida” for bad-smelling. Asafoetida products repel animals, except wolves which are attracted to it.

The smell is destroyed by cooking, and asafoetida is often used in place of garlic.

Historically asafoetida was used to combat respiratory problems by hanging a bad of it around the neck of the patient. It was used to fight the flu pandemic of 1918. Researchers in Taiwan have reported that the roots of asafoetida produce an antiviral compound which has killed the H1N1 swine flu virus. The resin also contains coumarins which are blood thinners.
