History and Additional Information

This plant was “discovered” in Jamaica by Christopher Columbus and named Allspice by the English who thought that it resembled a combination of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves.

Both the fruit and the leaves of Allspice are used. The fruit is dried fruit and looks like peppercorns. When freshly ground they produce a highly aromatic flavouring. Fresh leaves are used in the same way as bay leaves, but they do not dry well. Allspice essential oil contains a high percentage of Eugenol which suggests that may it may have anti-viral properties
