History and Additional Information
Zedoary is an old and ancient spice which is a relative of turmeric. Zedoary was introduced to the West by the Arabs where it became very popular especially during the Middle Ages. But, it is now very rare in the West and has been replaced by ginger for most practical uses. It is mainly used in festive rituals and different Indian perfumes.
Due to its mango like smell, Indeo-langues coined the spice “amb halad”, where “amb” means mango. Zedoary roots can be found both powdered and solid in markets. It has a ginger like taste is best preserved in an airtight jar or container.
