Everyone has felt nauseous at least once in their lives. While traditional folks might reach for a tums or pepto-bismol, there is actually a natural, essential oil based cure, and science actually backs it!
How Lemon Essential Oil Treats Nausea
Whenever you start to feel like you are going to vomit, there is something very devilish going on inside your digestive system. A little pesky organic compound known as 5-ht3 is being overproduced. And this is not good because 5-ht3 is the compound responsible for feelings of nausea. Luckily, lemon essential oil contains an element known as beta-pinene which works as a 5-ht3 antagonist, and blocks off the receptors making the uneasy feelings fade. Ginger essential oil also contains this 5-ht3 blocker, but not in as concentrated amounts.
How to Use to Treat Nausea
To treat nausea with lemon essential oil simply dilute 5-10 drops in a glass of water or juice and drink. If you are uneasy with tasting 5-10 drops, testing a glass of water with 1 drop to test your taste tolerance. For added benefits add ginger essential oil or fresh ginger juice. I also add lemon essential oil to my home brewed kombucha for a natural great tasting probiotic kick.
Is it Safe to Ingest?
As always, first consult with your doctor before ingesting any essential oils. Since lemon essential oil is derived from the cold pressed rinds of the lemon fruit, it is generally considered safe, but be sure to buy a food grade product. Also, be sure to test with 1 drop and wait 20 minutes before taking a full dose. I ingest citrus oils daily and have never experienced a problem, but, remember, everyone’s body chemistry is different.
