This plant has its origin around the European borders. It came from the arid Mediterranean region with Italy and Portugal haveing the most known users dating even as far back as 1820. In the north, they were mostly interested in cultivating these useful plants for the purpose of the oil. This led to M. Edouard Bernet of Antibes to become the number one specialist in matters of cistus, making up to 230 cultivars between 1860 and 1875. Cistus which thrives in traditional landscapes and rugged dry land is believed to be the biblical Rose of Sharon.
