History and Additional Information
One of the common names for Ajwain is bishop’s weed, but it should not be confused with the European and North American plant Aegopodium Podagraria (also known as ground elder or goutweed). Ajwain is also sometimes confused with lovage. The plant is very similar in appearance to caraway, dill and cumin which belong to the same family.
The ajwain oil extracted from Ajwain contains thymol, as found in thyme. However, most therapeutic uses of ajwain use the seed rather than the oil.
It is often used in Indian cuisine, especially in the Gujurat region where it complements the vegetarian cooking.
