History and Additional Information

The West Indian Bay, not to be confused with the Mediterranean Bay Laurel (Laurusnobilis), is a small evergreen tree growing up to 26 feet. It has aromatic fruits and large leathery leaves. It is cultivated throughout the West Indies, notably St. Thomas and Puerto Rico, and the extracts were first used as a cologne and aftershave lotion, under the name Bay Rum. The oil is extracted by steam distillation and mixed with rum and sometimes lime oil, oil of cloves, or cinnamon.

Made by Spanish soldiers in the time of Columbus, bay rum enjoyed great popularity in New York and other American cities before spreading to Europe.
