History and Additional Information

The name, Bergamot, comes from the Italian city of Bergamo in Lombardy. It was there that the oil first sold, but nowadays production is centered on Reggio di Calabria where the climate is conducive to growing the trees. Apart from its native South East Asia, the tree also grows in the Ivory Coast, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco.

It is best known as the distinctive flavor of Earl Grey tea, and the principal ingredient of 4711 Eau-de-cologne, along with lavender and neroli.
