Benefits

Anise Essential Oil can be used to treat bronchitis, the flu, colds and coughs, flatulence, muscle aches and rheumatism. It may stimulate the production of breast milk. At low dilutions, anise oil can calm emotions. Many people use it to threat asthma as well.

Instructions for Use

Use in a diffuser and as part of an inhaler blend for respiratory problems. It can also be used in very small concentrations in medical syrups and foods, but is not generally recommended for internal use.

History and Additional Information

Although the two species are unrelated, both anise (Pimpinellaanisum) and Star anise (Illiciumverum) contain anethole, so the flavor is similar. Pimpinellais much more expensive to produce than Star anise, so much so that most essential oils are now made from the latter.

In Egypt nursing mothers are given a hot tea made from anise called yansoon.

Anise oil has been used for such diverse things as alerting men to overheating in steam engines, or as a lure for fish and game.

Blending Suggestions: use sparingly to enliven otherwise dull blends. It also blends well with ginger, black pepper, pine and orange.

Safety Precautions for this Essential Oil: People with skin problems or very sensitive should use anise oil with caution. Avoid altogether if suffering from in endometriosis or oestrogen-dependent cancers. In large doses anise oil is slows circulation and is a narcotic.
